Is GoTranscript Legit – A Remote WFH Job To Avoid?

GoTranscript, founded in 2005 and headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland is a transcription agency that have a number of high end, well known clients including Bose, NetFlix, BBC, The University Of Cambridge, Stanford University, The New York Times and more.

To become a transcriber or transcription editor you will first need to create a free account, have a reasonably good laptop or desktop and a good stable connection to the internet. 

If, and when your application is accepted you are free to start taking on some work. 

You will be paid for every job that is successfully approved by the moderators. The amount earned will appear on your profile. The clients will rate your work accordingly also. 

To become an editor, you will need to maintain a 4.5 - 5 star rating and take the editors exam. 

What Is The Work Like?

When you take on a job, you have the benefit of first getting to listen to the file. This is done by clicking on the video icon that is on every job posted.

This is something that I do like as it benefits the transcriber giving them the option and power to select the jobs they want and know exactly what the quality of the files are. 

For the jobs that you want to take on just click the appropriate button marked "Make My Job".

You can work on the job online using their transcription software or download the job and use your own transcription software.  

Their turn around time varies from job to job and each individual client's requirements which can vary from 6 hours to 5 days. 

If, and when. you are working on a file and you need a little bit of extra time just click the icon "Extend Time". 

This is pretty handy, particularly for inexperienced transcribers and is not something I have seen from other transcription companies. 

If you forget to save your work - don't worry, their online system saves it every 30 seconds automatically. 

One of the plus points is whenever a new job is uploaded you get alerted meaning you know when work is available. 

GoTranscript certainly have a very well thought out process with the transcriber in mind as most of the formating is done for you.

When you completed the file and sent it to the editors, you can see your version and the final version and compare the two which will help you to improve your quality. 

To progress to the position of editor, you need to maintain an average rating of 4.5 stars and have taken on at least 15 transcription jobs and passed their transcription exam. 

As it is with other transcription companies, if you continually submit sub par low quality work your account will be closed. 

When you get rated at 3.4 or less 3 times in a row you will not be paid for those jobs. 

What Are The Application Requirements?

The requirements for applicants for GoTranscript are pretty low, with very few stated even in terms of hardware and software requirements. 

What is needed is an ability to pay attention to detail as your rating will be based on how accurate your transcriptions are, which will directly affect your ability to be promoted to editor and to get more jobs. 

You accuracy is based on GoTranscript's Guidelines for their transcribers. These guides are available to you once you have signed up and joined. 

You need to study those documents to know what they are looking for in terms of styling. 

It is really only stated that a good grasp of the English language is required, I disagree as there is a lot more to transcribing than just typing what you hear, which is why it is a well-paid profession. 

Speed, this is not something that is stated, but is an obvious advantage as the more work you can complete, the more you can earn. 

Proficiency and accuracy are key skills that advantageous but not mentioned on the site.

Other work at home jobs that may catch your attention include becoming an online bookkeeper, Teaching English Online Proofreading or being a Virtual Assistant (I currently employ 2, proof enough the job exists!).

Before you can take any live paid jobs you will need to take a short test. Make sure you download their guidelines, study it well, understand it and then move forward with taking the test which will be based on the guidelines. 

You will then be given an audio file to transcribe which is less than 3 minutes long. 

All that is left for you to do at this point is to sit tight and wait for around 2 weeks, in which time they will get back to you with your results.

There are no set fixed working hours. Your status with GoTranscript is as a self-employed freelancer. You are free to choose which hours suit you. 

The only "tie in" you have is related to the job you take - they must be completed within the stated turn around time. 

Other than this, your working life and schedule is up to you. 

In the world of remote transcriber jobs is is not easy to accurately predict or estimate how much can be earned on an hourly or monthly basis. 

Not even the individual agencies can give that information, at best a guesstimate is what you will get. 

I can tell you the rate per audio minute is US$0.60 which is low for transcribers. How much you can end up with on a monthly basis is estimated at US$150 per month on average with their top earners earning US$1,215. 

You will be paid for your work completed every Friday by Paypal or Payoneer. 

There is no minimum withdraw limit imposed.

There is some international love going on here, the focus is on, but not exclusively the recruitment of UK and US based transcribers. 

Something I always check is how a work from home opportunity is rated by certain organisations like Better Business Bureau.

GoTranscript are a UK based company and have no need to register or be rated by the BBB. 

The equivalent in the UK is the Trading Standards Office, which is a government agency and the Citizens Advice Bureau, there is no mention of GoTranscript on their respective websites. 

This is not a concern as the UK only make a list or warning when there is an irregularity or alert that consumers should know about. 

GoTranscript are well rated on Glassdoor with a 4.1 rating from 265 reviews with 87% saying they would recommend GoTranscript to a friend. 

They are also very well rated across the board on Indeed.com. 

There is not a lot of negativity or complaints around the web about GoTranscript. It does appear though that they are not seen in so great a light by experienced transcriptionists. 

There is a lot of positivity to GoTranscript, here is what I liked.

• They give new inexperienced transcriptionists a chance to gain experience.
• Lot of jobs available.
• You get to hear the audio before you select the job. 

There were some things that I did not like about GoTranscript, which were. 

• There is very little detail in regards to qualifications for the applicants they are seeking. 
• Earnings can be low.
• Takes a while to earn their trust and get a lot of work

You can make money with GoTranscript as this is a regular work from home job. Ultimately, how much you earn is down to how hard you work and how many jobs you take on and complete. 

GoTranscript is not a scam. 

I have been unable to uncover any incidents of concern regarding fraud, fraudulent activity or deception that would lead you or anyone else to be at a loss. 

It is fair and just to consider GoTranscript as legitimate. 

GoTranscript do fall into the category of "run of the mill" transcription agencies. If you are an experienced transcriber then there is no rhyme or reason for you to be bothering with them. 

If you are not experienced and just finding your feet in the industry and a new career then sure, use them to gain experience before moving on to greater things.
