QuickTate Review! A Legit Transcription Job?

QuickTate, founded in 2007 is a California based work at home transcription jobs agency that hires home based workers to provide transcriptions of a variety of different recordings that they have available. 

They have a wide range of services and applications that can convert short audio speech files to written text, including: 

1. TweetCall, For dictating Tweet
2. Evernote, For dictating audio notes and voice mail
3. Voice On The Go, dictating short texts.
4. CallTroops, Dictates telephone letters to military personnel

QuickTate and iDictate, their partners offer more extensive transcription services including: 

• Legal Transcription
• Medical Transcription
• Conference Calls

They hire general transcribers, and do not require their home workers to be certified or experienced.

This does mean that the jobs could be difficult to get as they accept anyone and the pay is not what a certified transcriber would expect to earn as a certified transcriptionist's salary is rather good.

Their transcriptions are predominantly in the English or Spanish Languages,  they also look for transcribers that are fluent in the following languages:

• Italian
• French
• Portuguese
• German
• Chinese
• Japanese

The jobs available are considered as micro jobs as the jobs are on a per task basis. You simply listen to the audio files and then transcribe them. 

The files are less than 5 mins long, typically only 1-2 mins each. Your hours are flexible, you can work as much or as little as you need to. 

One of the positive points that I do like about QuickTate is if you work well you can be promoted to work with iDictate.com which has files that are longer than 5 mins and pays better. 

What Is The Work Like?

As a transcriber, be it with QuickTate, iDictate, Casting Words or any other company the job is very simple. 

You hear, you type!. 

Once you have typed what you have heard, have a second or third run, or as many as required of the audio file and then proofread what you have read and run it through a grammar checker like ProWritingAid and then send the completed document to QuickTate for checking and approval. 

Once their Proofreader and editor has approved your work you will be paid. 

Generally speaking there is nothing terribly difficult when it comes to being a transcriptionist the only difficult part is when you encounter poor audio quality and heavy foreign accents.

There is no need to worry if your grammar is not up to scratch, if this was the case my chances would be right out the window!. 

Thankfully, in this day and age there are some incredibly good all in one grammar and spell checkers!. 

There are some equipment requirements that you must have to get a job as a transcriber, not just with QuickTate, with any of the hundreds of other similar agencies.

1. A Good laptop With a Connection To The Internet.
2. A Transcribers Headset And Mic. 
3. A Transcribers Foot Pedal.
4. Transcription Software
5. Spelling And Grammar Checker

The top two are obliged by QuickTate, I have added the other three as they will help you to get the job done better and more efficiently. 

The foot pedal will free your hands to do the typing while your foot controls the audio stop-start making your working life more fluent and fluid. 

Transcription software will help you to get the job done much quicker, helping you to take on more jobs. The last one, the grammar checker is for for better quality.

And the better your work, the more you can get paid as you can be recommended for a promotion to iDictate who pay better. 

The application process is very straight forward. Just head on over to the QuickTate Website and fill out the application form here.

You need to provide two references by non-family members and then answer two essay questions. 

Be sure that your grammar, spelling and punctuation is correct. I suggest you use This Free Grammar App, to make sure your grammar is spot on. 

Your next step is to study and read through their help desk FAQ and do your homework on the company and their procedures. 

You will then be quizzed on QuickTate's procedures and will be given a test file for transcribing.  

If you are like myself and a multi-lingual lover of life and want to be taken into consideration for transcribing in languages other than English or for Medical or Legal Transcription jobs you need to take those transcription tests also. 

The application process takes 2 weeks. If and when you are approved you will be sent a letter from them. 

Until you are accepted, you will not be unable to sign in to your QuickTate Account and take on any jobs.  

There are no set working days or hours with QuickTate or iDictate. 

Once you are approved to work as a transcriptionist with QuickTate, you can take as many jobs as you wish and schedule breaks and days off as you desire. 

This is unlike Teaching English Online, Call Centre Work, Or some Virtual Assistant Jobs where you are on set schedule. 

You can even work in your PJ's if your want!.

QuickTate pay in an non-standard way as far as the word or transcription goes. For each file that you complete you are paid on a per word basis and per minute of audio file. 

The rate of pays is currently: 

• US$0.0025 per word (4 words = 1 cent), standard rate
• US$0.0050 Per word (2 words = 1 cent), for more complex or specific transcription such as legal and medical.

It has been said that one hour of transcription equates to US$7 on average. Which may not sound like too much, that is depending on where you are and what you are looking for. 

In my opinion, it is not to shabby as a "hobby job" to gain experience while becoming a certified transcriber and bagging US$25/hr job in your local city or US$60+ freelancing online on sites like Fiverr and Upwork.

Which are rates I have seen freelance transcribers commanding on those sites, a rate you will not get unless you are fully qualified and experienced.

This does mean one thing, there is an abundance of work available for those that wish to take up transcription jobs.
