Speechpad founded in 2009 by David Feinleib, Mike Ruf, Ernie Beernink and headquartered in San Francisco Bay are a transcription service company that provide subtitles, closed captions and video transcription services for a wide range of companies in a number of industries, principally Insurance and Search Engine Optimisation.

How Does Speechpad Work?
The functionality of Speechpad as a Business is very easy to understand and follow.
They operate using the agency model where they act as a bridge between you the Freelancer and the client that needs work done.
This is beneficial for you as it saves you time looking for clients on your own on sites like Upwork and Fiverr , helpings you to spend more time on income producing tasks than looking for clients.
The jobs available with Speechpad are:
- Quality Reviewers.
- Subtitling and closed captions.
- Web video captioning service.
- Video tagging.
Experience is preferred but not essential. If you lack experience, expect to be given the lower paying job as the better ones get given to their freelancers with the highest ratings in their system.
When you accept a job from Speechpad your work gets rated and you receive an overall rating based on the previous 10 jobs that you have submitted and the number of corrections made by their reviewers.
The fewer the mistakes that you make, the higher and better your rating is.
What Is The Work Like?
The job as a Speechpad transcriber is exactly what you would expect of a transcription job where you are requested to convert audio files to the required text format using their style guideline.
Unlike some other companies, you have the opportunity to progress and be promoted once you have completed 500 minutes of files transcribed and maintained a rating of 96 or higher.
If you achieve that you can be promoted to be able to receive "rush jobs".
When you have completed 1,000 minutes and held a rating of 98 you can email support and request to be considered for work as a reviewer.
To be able to access jobs as a regular transcriptionist, you must have a rating of 94 or above for your last 10 jobs.
What Are The Application Requirements?
Speechpad allow inexperienced transcriptionists to apply for their jobs but it is said they can be a bit choosy.
What is expected:
- A strong grasp of the English Language, including grammar, punctuation and spelling.
- Be able to type at a speed of 40 words per minute or more.
- Have a good ear for difficult accents and dialects.
- Be able to understand certain technical terms, particularly those related to the insurance industry.
- A reasonably new laptop with an internet connection
- Transcriber headset and foot pedal
A spelling and grammar checker will go along way to helping to keep up your accuracy and quality rating.
If you don't meet their standards for what ever reason, like your typing speed you can consider Teaching English Online, Proofreading Online, Bookkeeping or being a Virtual Assistant.
What Is The Application Process Like?
The selection process for a Job at Speechpad is exactly what you would expect for remote work from home transcription jobs.
To apply for a Job with Speechpad you need to fill out their online application form and pass their basic test and grammar test.
During the transcription test you must score above 94 to be considered for work. Something to note - the result is given to you straight away, automatically zero waiting!.
This is head and shoulders above many others who may leave you waiting two to three weeks!.
When your application is successful and can start taking jobs right away!.

Are There Any Set Working Hours?
There are not set working hours. When you get a job with Speechpad you are working with the company and not for them.
Your status is as an independent contractor, Speechpad will be your client and not your employer.
You are free to set your own hours and schedule and take on as many or as few jobs as you wish. The only obligation is to complete the projects that you take on in their respective turnaround time and due date.
The turnaround time for a one hour audio file is 8 hours, of which can be extended by a further 4 if needed.
All turn around times can be extended by 50% if needed.

How Much Can You Make With Speechpad Jobs?
With remote transcription jobs the amount that you can earn depends on how quickly you can get the job done, which why the use of transcription software, food pedals, ergonomic keyboards are an advantage.
The Jobs dashboard lists the various different jobs that you can take. Currently the rate of pay is from 10 cents to 40 cents per audio minute.
For a transcriber that is peanuts! companies like TigerFish, BabbleType, LionBridge and Focus Forward pay significantly more (like double!).
Despite the ability to progress, I am not that impressed with their rate of pay.
How Does Speechpad Pay You?
Speechpad will pay you every 2 weeks to your Paypal account. There appears to be no minimum payout threshold.

Is This A WorldWide Work From Home Opportunity?
Yes,
There is a whole lot of international love going on here. The only problem you may have is if Paypal is not accepted in your country.
Is Speechpad Accredited By The BBB?
Something to check out always is how any prospective work from home job is rated on the Better Business Bureau.
This helps you to see how professionally they conduct business and how trusting you can be of them.
Speechpad are unaccredited and not rated by the BBB. Make of that what you may!.

Currently Speechpad are highly rated at Glassdoor holding a 4.0 rating from 39 reviews with 86% saying they would recommend Speechpad to a friend.

What I Liked About Speechpad
There a few things to like about Speechpad, namely:
- They give an opportunity to inexperienced transcribers.
- They pay by paypal.
- Worldwide opportunity.
- Application process and reply is automatic.
- 94 rating is not too hard to achieve.
- You have the opportunity to progress.
What I Did Not Like About Speechpad
There are a few things that I did not like about Speechpad which were:
- Unaccredited and Not rated at the Better Business Bureau.
- Pay is at best 50% less than that other organisations!. very low!.
- Audio files can be lengthy and not cut into segments.

Can You Make Money With Speechpad ?
Yes,
you can make money with Speechpad as this is a work from home remote job, but I do have to add that the pay is incredibly low!.
This would only be worth your while if you are in a country where the cost of living is considerably lower than western nations.
Even then, why?!? where are a ton of other transcription jobs out there paying much more!.
Is Speechpad A Scam Or Legit?
The rate of pay per audio minute of 10 cents to 40 cents per minute is, to use an expression, criminally low!.
But,
Paying poorly is not a crime - if it was half the CEO's would be behind bars!.
With that said, Speechpad is not a scam!.
Speechpad Alternatives
Thankfully you have a number of options open to you from similar companies.
Here are just a few.

- TigerFish
- CastingWords
- Focus Forward
- Allegis Transcription
- Daily Transcription
With those transcription agencies listed - all of them pay much better than Speechpad!.
The better ones are the ones worth fighting for, 3Play Media, GMR Transcription, Verbal Ink and SpeakWrite as they pay well but most importantly provide a regular flow of work and not odd jobs here and there.
The jobs with those companies get taken up very quickly by experienced professional transcribers.
And if you can't beat'em join'em!.
Get qualified, get certified and get yourself ahead of every Tom, Dick and Harry that is applying for remote transcription jobs and use and leverage the smaller to mid range companies to gain experience before you land contracts with the bigger and better companies.
And big they are, SpeakWrite for example is a US$30 Million a year business!.
The top course for studying and becoming a certified transcriptionist is Transcribe Anywhere.
Both their courses, general transcription and Legal transcription are detailed, fully comprehensive. The course owner herself is a lifelong transcriptionist and runs her own agency and know the business inside out!.
My Speechpad Review - The Final Conclusion
Speechpad, I'll be straight to the point, I am not to0 impressed with the low rates of pay, no listing at the Better Business Bureau or anything!.
Being quite frank, there is no reason for you to be bothering with them either as there are hundreds of other opportunities and companies you can try.
Don't waste your time, unless you are really desperate of the work or experience!.
