M*Modal founded in 2001 and owned by 3M are a Clinical Transcription Service business that are headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee. 

Besides being one of the biggest clinical transcription service business in the United States with a worldwide network of highly qualified medical editors, M*Modal also provide clinical documentation workflow solutions, advanced unstructured data analytics and advanced cloud based speech understanding technology. 

As a service they also offer voice-to-text solutions for capturing a patient's complete history and codify the physicians narrative to populate the Electronic Health Record, and other important healthcare information systems automatically. 

They are a former publicly listed company, having traded on the NASDAQ Index under the MEDH ticker symbol, at flotation in 2011 they were valued at US$36m, and were bought out by 3M for a whopping US$1Bn 7 years later.

They are said to have 750 employees and an annual revenue in excess of US$200 Million according to Owler. 

What Are The Application Requirements?

To be considered for employment with M*Modal you are required to: 

• Be available Weekdays Monday To Friday During Regular Outpatient Office Hours. 

• Have a High Speed Internet Connection. 

• Have at least 1 year of experience as a full time transcriptionist in multi-speciality clinic reports,  acute care hospital medical records, or radiology reports.

• If you have less than one year of transcription experience you may be accepted if you are certified and have competed an AHDI Certification course. 

• As a radiology Medical Transcriptionist with M Modal you maybe required to have a second high speed internet connection and a second phone line installed.

If you cant quite meet the requirements, you can always consider Proofreading, Teaching English Online, Becoming a Virtual Assistant or an Online Bookkeeper. 

There is very little information available in regards to the application process with M Modal, and next to none available online after performing various searches. 

I expect you will have an application form of some kind to fill out and detail your qualifications and experience which will be followed by taking a sample transcription test. 

I also expect that during some point you will be requested to provide or undertake, a criminal background check and sign a non-disclosure agreement.

I can accurately deduce this due to having reviewed 100+ similar companies of this nature. 

Yes, 

Usually as an independent contractor and freelancing transcriptionist you can set your own working hours and days but due the very nature of their business you have a set schedule to adhere to. 

The working hours are Monday To Friday during regular outpatient hours. 

The salary on offer with M Modal is paid on a per line of text edited basis and paid at a rate of 8 cents per line with 200 lines per hour.  

That equates to US$16 per hour, which for a highly skilled profession of medical transcription is low. 

Bare in mind this is US$16 per hour as an independent contractor you still need to deduct taxes and insurance. 

On Glassdoor the salary was stated as between US$10 to US$13 per hour with an average total salary being stated as US$23,000 per year. 

There are a few complaints on indeed in regards to low salary. 

It is not clear as how you are paid by M Modal, or how often be it weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. 

I suspect you are paid by direct deposit to your bank account with check being a very common option if requested. This is very common for companies of this nature.  

It appear that M Modal do have a world wide opportunity available as they are a global company and hire from a number of countries.

• India.

You should always check out work from home opportunities and the company behind them as part of your background checks. 

And one port of call is the Better Business Bureau. A companies BBB Profile you can gather a lot of information and make a decision on their authenticity and how much you can trust them...or not!. 

I can report that M*Modal are unaccredited and rated at an A+ By the Better Business Bureau. 

Note: When you search for MModal on the Better Business Bureu database it redirects to MediQuist Holdings, Inc. The rating and the screenshot below are for the correct company. 

There are some things that I did like about M Modal, let's talk about those: 

• They are Perfectly rated At A+ By The Better Business Bureau. 
• They are along established company. 
• They do have a genuine work from home job available. 
• Free To Join
• They have the potential for good long term work available.

There are some things that I did not like about M Modal, which were: 

• Despite their perfect rating with the Better Business Bureau, they are not fully accredited. 
• The pay is on the low side for what is a highly skilled job that required a lot of concentration.
• There is a lack of information about the recruitment process and pay on their website.

Yes, 

You can make money with M Modal as an independent contractor. The more you work, the more you will earn. 

Despite that damning report by Tough Nickel, I have been unable to uncover any indication of MModal being deceitful or fraudulent in regards to their freelancers or independent contractors. 

With this in mind, it is my opinion that MModal are not a scam. 

There is absolutely no doubting the authenticity of the job on offer by MModal at all, or the company, but I am rather concerned about the rate of pay which from my investigation is on the low side of transcription work of this nature. 

With that in mind, and if you are fully qualified and meet their requirements, approach with caution and keep in mind what the rate of pay is and that you can find much better and higher paying jobs. 

I am not one for advising against taking up employment with what is a real job as each person reading this article will have their own unique situation.

If you find yourself needing to apply and take up their job offer, do keep it at the fore front of your mind you can be earning more with another company and use them as a springboard if you need to.
