Is JiuQu English a Scam? Teaching Scam Or Legit Job? [Review]

Before I get started I'd like to congratulate you for being smart and seeking out independent reviews.

This is how and where you will find the real truth about a company or opportunity, avoid getting scammed and find a genuine way of making money online.

Let's get on with this Review and find out if JiuQu is a Scam or legit!

JiuQu English is the Chinese name for Qkids, which was previously known as Funbulous is an online Education platform that provides their Students, predominantly aged 5-12 years old with fully qualified American and Canadian ESL teachers. 

The objective of the company is to bring both cultures together for a better teaching and learning process experience.

The company Qkids/JiuQu English has an emphasis on making learning fun, interactive and using fun characters to aid the learning process. 

There does not seem to be to strict a requirement to become a teacher with JiuQu English/Qkids. 

It is stated that a bachelors degree or the pursuance of one, suggesting university students would be accepted. 

What does seems to be set in stone is residency in the US or Canada - this I found a little obscure and not quite sure why as both countries speak and Spell English differently.  

Which raises the question why rule out UK, Australia and New Zealand?. 

The company are highly rated in the ESL community with only couple of drawbacks, which I'll go over later in this article. 

Requirements For Working With Qkids / JiuQu English

In order to work with this ESL company you must meet the following qualification requirements.

• A University Degree or currently Studying At University
• Proficient English Speaker
• Outgoing Fun personality
• Experienced working with children or willingness to learn
• Resident in Canada Or America.  Residing in Mainland China also accepted. 
• English Language teaching certificates (TEFL, TESOL, ESL, CELTA) preferred. 

I am not entirely sure as why an insistence on residing in the US or Canada, either way this can easily be faked with mail forwarding address and US Clearance account - which you can get for free with Payoneer.

I'm not exactly sure how they are going to double check that you are actually in college or just take your word for it.

Either way - the requirements are not so strict as I would expect for teaching English. 

You need to have certain equipment of your own to get the job done, namely a modern computer with a webcam and head set. Naturally you need a high speed internet connection also. 

Without the equipment you simple can't and won't get the job done. 

What About The lessons?

The lessons and classes that you will be taking are short and sweet - only 30 mins each.

You can choose what hours that you are available. Keep it in mind that China is 12 hours ahead of the US and most lessons will be at awkward times in the morning and weekends. 

Just being available during a certain periods does not guarantee that you will have classes during that time frame. 

Typically your classes will have no more than 6 students. All your lesson plans are prepared for you and you will have no lesson planning to do which is a huge plus!.

There is a strong emphasis on making your lessons fun. The company Qkids/JiuQu English encourage you to play word games and read through interactive animated stories. 

You will need to try your best as the parents of the children will be rating you once the lesson is completed.

I have spent long enough in Asia (8 Years so far) to know that Chinese parents can be very demanding on their kids and expect them to be high achievers.

And that means excellent English - even if and when the parents understand zero!. 

Having a high rating means more work become available to you. 

How Much Will You Be Paid?

The minimum in which JiuQu English / QKids will pay you is US$8 per lesson which may not sound like much but that is US$8 for a half hour lesson which is pretty good in my opinion. 

Then there are bonuses that get added on and bring you up to an hourly equivalent of US$16 to US$20 per hour - Which is On Par With VIPKid Who Pay up to US$22/hr. 

If you can work online and from home, pick up regular work who is to say you can't do this job while travelling around lesser expensive countries like Thailand, Viet Nam, and the Philippines for example?.

I know plenty such travelling teachers that do just that. 

Qkids/JiuQu English will pay you to your US or Canadian Bank account number - no transfer fees will be deducted.

What Are Others Saying About Qkids/JiuQu English?

The company is well reviewed around the web. Well established and respected sites like Glassdoor many teachers are leaving positive reviews rating them at 4.5 out of 5 which is a pretty high rating.  

They don't fair so well on indeed though, at 4.2 out of 5 - still a good rating. I'm guessing making lesson fun, teachers are in a fun mood and thus rate working with them positively.  

One thing to keep in mind, when you are "employed" or have a "job" with this company your official status is as self employed i.e an independent contractor meaning that you are liable for your own taxes and - it is pretty easy for the company not to remain contracted to/with your services. 

They can easily let you go should your performance slip and your ratings drop.

Included in the requested hiring materials are your resume, confirmation of your availability, a screenshot of your computer specifications and a 1 to 2 minute introduction video. 

It is not said how the Video is to be delivered - YouTube link or dropbox.

You will then go through 2 demonstration interviews to demonstrate your teaching skills and abilities. 

Naturally, any genuine way to make or earn money online has its plus points!. 

• Genuine Company - A Real Job!
• You Can Legitimately get some of those internet bucks from them!
• Fun Easy Job - Classes Are Nice And Short! 
• Paid Direct To Your Bank Account.

Nothing is ever perfect, and there were somethings that I did not like about JiuQu English. 

• Ratings Can Be Harsh Or Highly Misunderstood by Pushy Parents
• Awkward Hours - Drag Your Butt Outta Bed Look All Awake And Pretty At 5am for a lesson. 
• Lack Of Job Security - Your are always on the line/shaky hook!.

Absolutely!. You can most certainly get your hands on some digital cash thanks to JiuQu English/Qkids. 

It's a regular job/employment based and they do pay!. 

No, absolutely not!.

There is absolutely nothing at all to suggest that JiuQu English/Qkids is a scam. There might be a lack of work from time to time but as an independent contractor you are absolutely free to work with other companies such as VipKid. 

In my opinion, go for it!. 

This could be a great fun way to earn some extra cash online, the hours may be awkward by any lost sleep can be made up with a cheeky siesta. 

If you are serious about teaching online you can of course combine your efforts with other teaching companies and get a lot more work coming your way. 

If you are an experienced teacher or when you gain the experience you can build a site detailing your teaching experiences online, where to find the jobs, how, lesson plans and gain affiliate commissions for recommending teaching courses - some of which pay rather handsome commissions!. 

Get enough traffic to your teaching blog and you can start to earn good money from display ads. 

And then who knows...sell your own teaching lessons. There is a huge market for that!.

When I was volunteering I used to buy my lesson plans at $5 a pop - remember these can sold multiple times over!. 

A simple teaching blog - any subject! - There you go 3 different methods of monetization!. That is certainly a side line that could become a full time income!.
