Is Legal Shield A Scam? Guilty Or Innocent? [Review]

Legal Shield Is a Multilevel Marketing business, founded by Harland Stonecipher in 1972 and are headquartered in Ada, Oklahoma. 

Legal Shield were originally known as Sportsman's motor club and later pre paid legal services.

In 2011 the name changed for third time to be come known as Legal Shield after a merger with Midocean Partners, A New york based Private Equity Firm. 

The business was acquired by Stone Point Capital in February 2018.

The company focus on legal services and identity theft & monitoring. Their services only cover the US and Canadian markets. 

The company has over 1,000 employee's and generates and estimated US$400 million in revenue annually.

Let's now detail how you will be compensated for your efforts

Legal shield is a network marketing opportunity and therefor has two principle ways for you to make money with their business opportunity. 

1. Direct Retail Sales: Sell their legal services and earn a commissions for your efforts
2. Recruitment: Encourage others to join you and your team earning pass up commissions and bonuses. 

How much you earn is of course fully dependent on which legal product you sell. Something to keep in mind is your commissions earned is an advance, paid up front on the assumption that a client remains so for a full 12 months. 

If a client cancels prior to the end of the 12 months you will face deductions on your commissions earned - known commonly as charge backs. 

There are 7 ranks to the Legal Shield Compensation Plan

• Associate
• Snr. Associate
• Manager
• Snr. Manager
• Director
• Snr. Director
• Exec. Director

For each US$39.90 monthly plan that you manage to sell you will earn a US$100. As I mentioned before this is an advance, and any cancellations before a 12 month period is finished you will have that commission deduced, taken from future commissions. 

As you rise up in the ranks you can earn more from those commissions, for example for an executive director the commission on the same package rises to US$280. 

Also, it can be noted that as you rise up the ranks and your team grows you start to earn override commissions from US$20 to US$50 As shown in the image below. 

As it is with pretty much all network marketing opportunities you can expect a fair bit of carrot dangling!. 

LegalShield are no different in this aspect where they have their set of incentives as bonuses which include exotic trips and well, a BMW!. 

Personally I really not into that kind of hula-pa-lula or razzmatazz.

I see it all as a side show, and "bovine excrement" to distract you from the fact that face to face selling of any product or recruitment is not that easy.

Have you ever notice that you will see all those BS promotion and they how quick they mention the cars and the holidays and the what not thrown with very little to nothing mentioned about what it take, how many sales to achieve that to actually get those bonuses. 

All smoke and mirrors!.  

Less than 0.5% will get near any of those bonuses on average, with your average MLM opportunity!

This not to mention that most network marketing companies don't give you any proper training.

It's a case take your money for joining and shove you out into the cold harsh world with zero training.

This is why most people fail with network marketing opportunities.

To cancel your Legal Shield membership as either an agent or a customer you will have to do so officially by sending a written cancellation to Legal Shield. 

Include your personal details including your membership No, & if you know it, whom you joined with - your referring agent. 

Given some of the difficulties with cancellations that I have read about I suggest that you do this by both Email (save your sent email) and by regular snail mail. 

When sending by snail mail send by recorded delivery so you have some proof of your cancellation letter being delivered.

LegalShield are not a Publicly Listed Company and have never been listed on the stock exchange. They are owed by a New York Based Private Equity Firm. 

Previously, under a previous name prior to the merger with Midocean Partners when they were known as Pre Paid Legal Services they were a publicly listed company going by the ticker symbol of PPD. 

There is a lot to like about Legal Shield: 

• Highly Rated By The Better Business Bureau

Should I say, perfectly rated and fully accredited. Always something that is great to see. 

• No Physical Product

This is great plus as you have no inventory to store and to stock up on, at most membership cards and membership documents which can be downloaded and printed out. 

• A Very Unique Product

The service of selling legal coverage is a great idea and is very unique meaning you will have few competitors in the market. 

• Well Priced Affordable Products

Making their products well within the affordable price of everyone helps you to sell their service. 

• Not Too Expensive To Get Started

Legal shield is relatively inexpensive to get started and with few ongoing costs ($20 month (optional)). 

Nothing is ever perfect and there were some things that I did not like about Legal Shield. 

• A Lack Of Training

There seems to be a lack of sales, recruitment and team management training. This sadly happens to be the "DNA" of network marketing companies. 

• 7 Ranks To Their Compensation Plan

MLM industry analysts state the maximum number of ranks should be 5. 

•  The Lawsuits Against Legalshield

There have been a number of lawsuit filed against legalshield under their previous name before their merger with Midocean partners. 

According to the income disclosure statement by Legal Shield you will find it very difficult to to earn a full time liveable income from their business opportunity. 

Lets examine what their own income disclosure statement has to say. 

Basically, should you work your butt off for 20 years you can expect to earn somewhere around the average national minimum salary. 

More interestingly about $40 a week you can expect after 2 years. 

It is fair to say that you won't be, on average earning a full time income with Legal Shield at least not during the next 20 years!. 

Not Guilty!.

By their very nature all network marketing opportunists look like pyramid schemes.

Due to technicalities in the law, particularly speaking the 1979 Amway ruling I cannot say that Legal Shield are a Pyramid Scheme due to having a product, legal services, attached to their business opportunity. 

Guilty As Charged!.

Legal Shield are a multilevel marketing business opportunity. This is fairly evident due to their compensation plan and payout structure. 

In my opinion Legal Shield is not a scam. 

Having dug deep and investigated this company, there is nothing about them that would permit me to say fairly they are a scam. 

They are a legitimate business and business opportunity.

Being difficult to earn money from them or with their opportunity is not justified to say that they are scam - just an opportunity that you would likely struggle to turn into a successful and profitable business. 

Final sentencing! 

I strongly suggest that you banish Legal Shield to the Gallows!. 

They are a good business, and have a great product and service - I'd be honest If they were available where I am I'd join...as a client. 

But given the average earnings of their agents - 20 years to average US$16,000 a year.

No thanks!. 

Unanimous verdict - best avoided!
