In simple words, A multi-user website is called Dynamic website that must have a single or multiple databases. A user can input any kind of data on the databases based on their permission level.

Migrating A Website To A New Host Consists Following Steps:

  • Moving the Files to the New Host
  • Database Transfer (If any available)
  • Connecting the Databases with Web Files
  • Pointing New DNS on Domain Panel

Moving the Files To The New Host: In cPanel hosting, you will find all of your website files under “File Manager”.

If you have a single website hosted on the old hosting, then you will find all of them inside the “public_html” directory.

Top right, click file manager.

All the files you will find as a list here; Downloading the files separately and upload them together is a difficult task for many.

If you miss a single or multiple files when uploading them on a new host; then this will make your website malfunction!

So, Pay attention to this step.

Please do pay attention to this step and don't miss a single file!.

To avoid, any kind of serious error while performing your website migration, I move all the files in a folder that I rename “Old - Site .com”. I compress it to a .zip file; download it and move it to a new host.

Transferring this way ensure proper transfer of a website without missing a single file. You just need to uncompressed it in the proper place.

If you are transferring multiple websites, then you need a clear concept about domain types on web hosting.

  • Primary Domain
  • Add-on Domain

The domain that is directly linked with the hosting is called primary domain. When you register a hosting package, they ask for a primary domain that you have to use controlling all the hosting features.

Even you are hosting multiple websites on the same hosting, a primary domain is mandatory that gets the highest priority. All the other domains you have to add using the “Add-on Domains” feature.

All of your primary domain website data you will find under the “public_html” folder what I discussed above. You will know the primary domain name in the right sidebar area of your hosting.

All the Add-on domain files you will find under the “File Manager” area before you enters the “public_html” folder. I am adding an image for better understanding.

Let’s consider we have 2 add-on domains named –

  • Wppathfinder.com
  • Muhibul.net
So, we should have two directories on our hosting like below image under “File Manager” section.

What you do here is, to just compress specific domain directory using the  “Compress” menu placed on the upper area. Then download the file & upload it to your new host.

Because WordPress is the best CMS (Content Management System) that anyone can manage. User-friendliness of WordPress CMS makes this popular and people can handle a WordPress website without any coding knowledge.

But migrating a website to WordPress needs some technical knowledge; especially coding knowledge. I suggest you consult with a good WordPress developer and migrate your website to WordPress.

Transferring a WordPress website is much easier than other types of websites. I already discussed the method that you can follow above.

You need less than 10 minutes to transfer your WordPress website from one host to another host.

But migrating your website can bring some serious damage to your website that can cause negative result on your websit'se SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

What are Some Common Problems People Experience After Website Migration?

  • Broken Links: You must check your website links carefully. Sometimes, people experience broken link issue on their newly transferred website. This can be done using and one of the many brokenlink checker plugins or web based scanners that operate by means of the web. The one I use is simple called broken link checker!

You should fix them manually or redirect broken links to a new URL. In this type of case, I suggest you using 301 redirection method.

Because this way you can pass all the SEO value to new link that was on the broken link.
  • DNS Update: People also experience DNS update issue when they transfer their website. Depending on hosting provider, it takes less or more time.

You need to wait a few hours after changing the DNS or remove cookies & cache from your web browser.
  • Broken Menu: If your menus does not work properly, you can fix it from URL settings.

You can access the URL settings from “Settings>Permalinks” If you find everything is well set, but the menu not working, then you need to update link setting once.

Just change your link version and revert it to the previous version again.

This will solve your broken menu  problem easily.

  • Webmail Login Problem: A common problem people always experience after changing their old host to a new host.

They can’t log in on their webmail email accounts using the old login id & password. This happens because they do not transfer their “etc” folder.

In your backup file, you will find an, etc folder that you need to upload on a new hosting account. But the problem is, there has already an etc folder available in the new host. So, you need to rename it or compress the folder & download a backup before you delete it.

You can use this backup in the future in case you want it.

Now upload your old etc folder replacing the new one. This will solve your webmail login problem. Because this folder contains all email login data.

  • Https Problem: You may experience https:// problem on your newly transferred website. Because you installed an SSL certificate on an old hosting account that will not work on new hosting.

If your old SSL certificate was not linked with the old hosting, you can use it with the new hosting.

Or you can install a new SSL certificate on new hosting to get rid of the https:// problem.
