DoorDash Review – Can You Really Make Money Delivering Food? [UPDATED]

Now, lets crack on with this review and find out if DoorDash is worth your while or a big waste of time!.

DoorDash.com is a nationwide local food delivery service based out of San Francisco. 

DoorDash helps to connect restaurants with clientele that would rather eat from home and have their food delivered, which has the potential of increasing a restaurants turn over and profitability by helping them to reach a new audience and increase profitability. 

In turn, with their large network of restaurants and food outlets that they work with there is potential of regular work as a "Dasher" - a food delivery person. 

Currently they have over 10,000 outlets connected to them all over USA and Canada. 

The company was founded in 2013 by 4 Stanford University Students and currently after a $600M USD 7th round of seed funding valued at a $12.6Bn business. 

The total funding to date received is just over $2 Billion and generates $1.3Bn annually in Revenue.  

Their App is Available on Apple Devices Here. Currently it is not available on Android devices. Service can be ordered online via their site also.

Why the name DASH? well its is a pretty cool acronym for Downtown Area Short Hop! D-A-S-H! pretty smart huh!. 

How DoorDash functions is pretty simple, they are an on demand food delivery service where you can order the best and most delicious food in your town and have it delivered to the comfort of your home or office. 

Once you order food from their App, the restaurant in question then starts making the food and the delivery guy or gal that are affectionately known as "dashers" then go to the restaurant and pick up the food and deliver it to you. 

As a Dasher you can increase your service quality by unpacking the food for the customer and giving a great service. 

In essence DoorDash team up with local restaurants of a all sorts and work on a commission basis.

As a delivery dude or dudette your job is to pick up the food and deliver it from the restaurant to the customer. You will be paid for every trip that you make. 

Becoming a DoorDash Driver is very easy. The company only requires some basic information from you. The same information that you would expect to fill out if you were applying for a regular delivery job. 

• Your Name
• Email, phone number
• Social Security Number, 
• Your Vehicle type 
• Insurance Details
• Driving licence details

After that you will under go a background check and you will need to download the app and then get your gear. 

There a few requirements that must be met before you can be accepted as a DoorDash Driver. 

• Be over 18 years old
• Live in a location where DoorDash Provide Services
• Access to a vehicle 
• Have Insurance for the vehicle
• Pass their background check. 
• Have you own smartphone
• Have 2 years driving experience as a minimum.

Them it is up to you to turn on the app and accept some delivery orders and start earning some money!. 

Dash operates in almost all major cities and towns in America and Canada.

On the website they make the claim that you can earn up to $25/hr. This I expect might be a bit of a push and during busy periods where you are doing multiple deliveries per hour. 

On the plus side DoorDash do guarantee that you will earn a minimum of $10 per hour. In the instances where you earn less than that per hour the company will make up the difference. 

It is reported that $5 per delivery +tips is the average amount per delivery order.

Not a great amount but it might be good as an extra source of income for you or to help you pay your way through your studies. 

This company is pretty flexible as far as getting paid goes. They can pays you by direct bank deposit or to your Paypal account. 

They will pay you every Wednesday during the evening, or daily if you so wish!. 

DoorDash is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau, the company is rated as "fall flat on your face F" by the BBB. 

Rather alarmingly there have been nearly 900 complaints during the past year and almost 1,200 in the past 3 years. Credit to the company though for dealing with those complaints. 

In their favour, they are a massive organisation operating coast to coast all across North America.

The most common complaint you can imagine is due to billing (of their food) and delivery costs, charges and time taken. 

This actually something that I expected to find while researching the company and their service.

This is due to restaurants changing prices regularly due to seasonally affected price changes and the restaurant owners not being able to edit, adjust the menus (or pricing) on the site and customers seeing old prices and possible food items no longer available. 

This part could easily be managed with Restaurant owner log in and dedicated area manager/team that publish the changes within 24/48 hrs Allowing business owners to manage much better their menu and where it is seen. 

Alternatively allow integration of their own site onto DoorDash enabling owner the simplicity of just adjusting on their own site and changed being visible on DoorDash. 

From what I see if you become a Dasher expect some complaints from time to time due to this issue. 

Naturally speaking the best time to DoorDash will vary from city to city. It is unlikely that you will find much work during breakfast time. 

Luch time from 11am to 14:00 hrs and 17:00 to 21:30 is likely to be peak hours. Don't be shy - send an email to the company or call them and ask when their busy times are.

They will all too happy to help!. 

The background check can take up to 5 days and rarely less than 2 days. If you have not heard back from them send an email to Dasher@Doordash.com.

Naturally speaking there are a lot of plus points for DoorDash, namely.

• Yum Yum! You can get free meals on the company. Lunch and one other. That is pretty cool. Awesome if you are like me and have a small appetite - could be you whole food budget paid for or at least half of it!. Delicious food too I imagine if you select right...

• No Cash flow Issues: Daily payment option means no cash flow problems with the company. 

• Its A Job Anyone Can Do. This is great if you are hitting hard times and need work...and quickly. 

• Work Your Own Hours - This is perfect if you are seeking to work whenever you feel like it or have awkward schedule work or study wise. 

Nothing is ever perfect, as expected there are some down points to DoorDash. 

• Can Be A Lot Of Downtime
• Work Busier during evening/weekends when you might want to relax
• You need a lot of work to make money - as is with Uber for example. 
• Expenses such as Gasoline you will need to cover - not the company. 
• Horrible F rating on the Better Business Bureau. 
• Lot of complaints also.

Yes you can make money with DoorDash. I don't think you will cash laden or stuffing your pockets with money by being a Dasher. 

However,

You can operate on a multi-supplier relationship and work with a number of food delivery agencies and accept jobs from multiple food delivery companies and mixin your Grab/Uber driving with DoorDashing!.

Should at least minimise your downtime and have money coming in. 

DoorDash is, in my opinion absolutely legit. Nothing at all to suggest that the company is operating on the darker side of the law or anything remotely shady at all. 

Completely legit. 

DoorDash is absolutely legit, there is no question about that at all. The only question is how much can or will you make and are you happy earning that amount? 

From what I have seen the average pay irons out at $10/hr less your gasoline costs which can eat into your income. If you are happy with that then by all means apply to be a Dasher.
